PART 1: BEGINNING + LOGO
First up: mind map + moodboard.
Warm, happy, quirky, optimistic, fun, with a hint of sass. Those were the descriptors I chose for Central Flavors and the images I chose for the moodboard reflect those qualities.
I looked through vintage Florida advertisements, citrus imagery, ice cream logos, warm colors, and 70s designs.
Then, onto the sketches.
The left three logo sketches were my original directions. After refinement, I chose to go with the middle design and fully designed it.
After receiving feedback, I chose to go in a different, less representational direction with line art and a simplified logomark.
For the typeface, I wanted to go with a clean and classic sans-serif, and Futura fit the bill.
The logo colors are limited to three: red, orange, and yellow. The flavors have a wider range of colors, each with a light, medium, and darker color.
PART 2: PHYSICAL PACKAGING
Then began the physical aspect of the project. I decided on making 4oz cups, pints, and a 6-pack holder, based on applesauce cup holders.
First up, research + sketching.
After sketches, I switched to the computer and began prototyping.
This involved far more math than I anticipated. I had to tweak and test print multiple versions to find the dimensions that allowed the label to fit perfectly, with no overlap or gap.
PART 3: REFINEMENT & PRODUCTION
After perfecting the measurements, I finalized the designs. This involved taking the specific angle for each cup's warp and designing on a curve.
PART 4: POINT OF SALE DISPLAY
An element of the project is creating a point of sale display for a store. As always, sketches began the process.
After choosing a display, I began to outfit it with designs. I wrapped each side in designs and added a white backsplash, designs for the cup placements, and the top banner.
PART 5: DELIVERABLES
In addition to the design, printed elements, and display, I made a printed book that details the process of creating Central Flavors, a website, and magazine ad.
PART 6: BEHIND THE SCENES + WRAP-UP
From printing to color testing, cutting, assembling, and 2am Gringos Locos runs, the entire process was a memorable experience. Even with the sleep deficit and stress, it was a blast.
And, of course, the side effects of pulling multiple almost-all-nighters:
I love packaging design. Here's to the next project!
